“Thus says the Lord: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals…” (Jeremiah 17:5)

The book of Genesis says that when God made human beings at the end of creation, he saw that it was very good! How can he tell us today not to believe in human beings? All our human relations are based on a minimum of mutual trust. Parents have faith in their children; conversely the children in their parents; spouses need mutual trust, and so do friends. The Lord is not asking us not to build these trusting relationships. We know that without mutual trust, community life is a chimera. But the Lord calls us to build our lives on a solid foundation, and this foundation is Christ and his word.
Lord, I thank you for reminding me that you are the ground for my life. Give me the hunger for your Word. Let my life be firmly rooted in you and in your Word.
